Adult Guided Nature Walks

The child has a different relation to his environment from ours…the child absorbs it. The things he sees are not just remembered; they form a part of his soul. He incarnates in himself all in the world about him that his eyes see and his ears hear.
— Dr. Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind, 1949

Guided walks allow for intentional pauses to observe and discuss nature, offering moments for reflection and conversation. With an adult facilitating the experience, children gain insight into the environment, learning about local flora, fauna, and ecosystems in a meaningful, hands-on way.

As children engage in this focused exploration, they develop social-emotional skills, including patience, listening, and cooperation. They also gain confidence in their abilities to navigate and appreciate the world around them. These walks provide a balance between structured learning and exploration, fostering curiosity and environmental awareness.

Children under six learn primarily through direct experience. Describe the flutter of a ladybug, the sparkle of a dewdrop, or the vastness of the ocean to a child who has never seen them firsthand, and your words will likely fall flat. Show that child the ladybug, the dewdrop, or the ocean, and their eyes will widen with wonder as they experience the magic & beauty of life on Earth.
